During the last half of 2019, the newly appointed Latham Lassies Board has been working hard to develop and plan out the Spring/Summer Recreational program while fostering new relationships and strengthing existing ones with our community.
Through the Fall of 2019, the Board worked to secure indoor space to host our Travel Teams so our girls could keep active, develop their softball skills and to foster team relationships! The previous Board had worked with Shaker High School to build two new sheds and after the completion of the sheds, the new Board coordinated the delivery and placement of the sheds. In early January of 2020, the new sheds were installed at the fields. Through the registration period in February and March of 2020, the board worked feverishly to update the Latham Lassies Website while trying to coordinate the 2020 Rec Season.
In Mid-March, plans were put on hold and all Latham Lassies events were postponed or cancelled due to the Coronavirus Outbreak. The board held their first ever online meeting to continue our planning for the upcoming season. During the March 2020 meeting, plans were developed to work on a modified or postponed Rec season in hopes that the opening games would occur on or about May 2nd. During this meeting the Board approved the purchase of a new attachment for our tractor to make field maintenance easier.
As COVID-19 was prevalent in New York from March through May, reopening plans were put on hold again and an emergency Board meeting was held at the end of May to determine the fate of the 2020 Rec Season. Due to recommended saftey precautions and guidelines, it was determined that managing the Rec season with the number of teams we had would be an impossible task in a shortened time frame so it was decided that the 2020 Rec Season would go down in history as the first season ever cancelled.
As New York's COVID data began to improve, the state shifted focus to reopening and all Low-Risk (no-contact) Youth Sports, including softball, would be included in Phase 3 of the reopening process. It was announced that these sports could resume in the Capital Region as of July 6th. The Board shifted focus to get the fields open by working with the Town of Colonie and got approval to use the fields for softball practices and games.
With all safety measures in place, the fields were opened for Travel team practices and games. The Board put together a new registration process and opened up a Summer Sandlot free of charge to provide our Rec players a chance to get out on the field again.
History and Background
The Latham Lassies Softball League began in 1988 as part of Latham Youth Baseball with 80 girls. Games were played at various locations in the Town of Colonie. Due to the league's immediate popularity, parents and league organizers incorporated the league in 1989.
In 1989, the Town of Colonie constructed two fields and a concession stand at the Town Park for exclusive use of Latham Lassies. That very same year, our 2nd season, the Latham Lassies Won the 10 and Under New York State Championship!!
In 1990, we branched out and hosted our first State Tournament and the town built us a new and improved concession stand. And just to make sure everyone knew the league was around for good. . . . . we repeated as 10 and Under New York State Champions!! The league continued to grow and in 1992, we had more than 300 girls and 29 teams in the league. In 1993, we challenged ourselves and held 3 successful tournaments for first time at 10U, 12U, and 14U.
In 1994, we made history. . . One of our 10U teams played in a tournament with poor weather. As a result, the game starts at 2:00 AM and fallout leads to national ASA rule changes as to how late games can start.
In 1996, the Latham Lassies enrollment peaked. . . 560 girls and 42 teams!! In 1998, lights were installed and we began playing night softball.
We're proud of our history and we hope your little girls can join in the fun!
A very special thanks to Patrick Jeffers, a long time Board Member, coach, and dedicated parent for gathering this information for us!
