Who can register?

Any girl age 4-17 (5 by Dec 31 of that year) that attends either a public or private school is eligible. Players from outside this school district are welcome with Board approval. 

How much does it cost?

The registration fee varies. See current year registration for details.

What if my child never played before or can't play well?

Latham Lassies is a recreational league. We are here to teach girls, of every skill level, how to play softball.

How do I register my child?

Registration is done online on the registration page.

Which division would my daughter play in?

Our league uses ASA rules to assign players to a division. These rules are based on the age of each player on January 1st of the current year. Use the table below to determine which division your daughter would play in this year.

Are there tryouts?

Yes, there are tryouts for all divisions except T-ball. Tryouts are held to help us evaluate player's skills. Managers and coaches can then select teams that are roughly equal in talent. No player is excluded from playing. Tryouts are usually held during the last weekend of March, and they are held separately for each division. After you register, you will be e-mailed a notice that includes where and when your child's tryout will be.

When will I know what team my daughter will play for?

Within a week after tryouts, Managers select their players. Managers should contact their team players within one to two weeks after their tryout. If you do not get a call within this time, please notify the player agent.

T-Ball team managers usually call their team players around mid-April.

Do they practice? How often?

Definitely. How often depends on the manager. The league encourages and expects its managers to take the time to teach the game. However, some managers conduct practices more than others for a variety of reasons. Most managers, especially in the older divisions, start practices within days of calling their players right after tryouts. Many times, however, gym time for practices is hard to find and practices don't start until later.

T-Ball managers tend to use games for practice. At this young age, players learn more about the game by actually playing on the field than by doing drills in a gym.

What should my daughter bring to practices and games?

Players should bring their own glove and wear sneakers/cleats. All other equipment is provided by the league for the duration of the season.

Where are the games played?

Every game is played at the Colonie Town Park. Each division has its' own playing field. Click here for directions.

If your daughter is on a Travel team, games are generally played within the Capital District but could be further. See the Travel Team page for more info.

What days of the week and what times are games played?

In general, teams play 2 or 3 games a week. Weekday games start at 6:00pm. Weekend games start any time between 10:00am and 5:00pm. There are no doubleheaders (2 games on the same day). Teams in the 12u and 16u divisions may have night games scheduled between 7:00pm and 8:00pm, but only on Fridays and Saturdays. Occasionally, younger divisions make up rained out games at night.

When does the season start and end?

The first regular season scheduled game is typically played on the last week in April. The last regular season scheduled game is played mid June, depending on the size of your daughter's division.

Immediately after the last regular season game is played, every team except 8U and T-ball enters the playoffs. A player's season ends when her team is eliminated from the playoffs, or wins the championship. The championship game is played about a week after the first playoff game.

T-Ball and 8U teams do not have playoffs.

How many games do they play?

How many games are played depends on how many teams there are in each division. If possible, we try to have at least 12 regular season games.


Can I manage a team, or coach?

All managers are parents of active players. Most of them have been managing or coaching since their daughters started playing, and thus, are experienced and understand the commitment and effort required to manage a team. The Executive Board select managers and most managers who have prior experience are selected. However, a few manager positions become available every year and requests are considered to fill the vacancies. All manager and assistant coach requests are submitted online just as player registrations are taken. There is no fee to manage or coach a team.

Managers determine who will coach for his or her team. Once players are assigned to a team, those interested in coaching should show up regularly at practices and communicate their interest directly to the manager. Help is always welcome.

I don't know anything about softball. Is there any other way I can help?

Latham Lassies is a non-profit organization entirely run by parents who volunteer their time, talent and ideas in a variety of ways that have little to do with softball. Field maintenanceconcession stand and equipment management are key positions that go a long way toward running a smooth softball season. There are also a variety of short-term tasks for special events such as Opening Day, Field Day, and Tournaments. If you can help in any way, please contact an Executive Board member.

What are my responsibilities during the season?

Every parent is expected to do their part by bringing their child to as many practices and games as possible.

We also urge you to take a few minutes of your time to practice with your child. Managers and coaches will gladly suggest some drills you can use at home, both indoors and outdoors with little, if any, equipment.

All parents are expected to donate a few hours of their time during the season for concession stand duty. If for any reason they cannot attend, they must make arrangements with someone who will take their place. Our league considers this duty very important. The concession stand helps keep registration fees low, and provides the league with funds that are used for repairs, regular maintenance and improvements to our park.

All parents are expected to conduct themselves as mature adults during games.

I've heard about Travel teams. What are they?

Every year, girls who would like to continue their season can play on a "Travel Team". There have historically been one to two travel teams per division (8u, 10u, 12u, and 14u). Players are selected by managers and coaches to represent our league at tournaments held after the regular season and playoffs. Interested players must attend one or more tryouts for their division's travel team. Those who are selected pay an additional travel fee that covers the cost of uniforms tournament registrations, and related expenses. Travel team players are expected to commit themselves to attend 3 or more tournaments and play a total of approximately 20 games over the summer, some of which are held at our park and some of which are held at other leagues. Details will be made available just before tryouts are held.

Where and when do league officials meet, discuss and decide important issues affecting our league?

The board meets monthly, typically the third Tuesday of the month, from 6:00 to 8:00pm at Shaker High School. All parents are welcome to attend, vote, share their ideas and express their opinions on any matter concerning the league.
